Teaching is Service

City Teaching Alliance was named an AmeriCorps Professional Corps program in May 2019.

City Teaching Alliance was named an AmeriCorps Professional Corps program in May 2019. This designation recognized our commitment to preparing educators to serve in full-time, hard-to-staff roles in schools across the country. More than 270,000 Americans of all ages and backgrounds give their time and talent to organizations across the country each year as they serve as AmeriCorps members. As an AmeriCorps-affiliated program, we’ve connected hundreds of aspiring educators to a national service network dedicated to addressing critical community needs—like education.

While AmeriCorps status varies by region and year, our commitment to service and educational equity remains unwavering.

Where We Stand Now: AmeriCorps and Cohort 2026

AmeriCorps is a federally regulated, congressionally approved program with an annual application cycle, and like many national service programs, we’ve experienced changes in eligibility from year to year. Despite these fluctuations, our commitment to honoring teaching as public service remains steadfast.

Important note: Even if your region is currently ineligible, you wouldn’t be able to access AmeriCorps benefits (like the Segal Education Award) until your second year in the program anyway. That means there’s still time to restore affiliation before it impacts you. We remain committed to supporting you with high-quality coaching, coursework, and certification preparation—and we’ll continue working to restore access to AmeriCorps benefits in the years ahead.

  • AmeriCorps Status for Cohort 2026
Dallas: Fully eligible — teachers in this region will be able to enroll in AmeriCorps and access the Segal Education Award. Central Maryland and Baltimore: Expected to be eligible — we are on track for renewed affiliation and anticipate full eligibility for teachers in this region. Philadelphia & Greater DC Metro: Not currently eligible — like many programs nationwide, these regions are not AmeriCorps-affiliated at this time. However, we are actively working with urgency and in collaboration with national partners to restore status by the time eligibility impacts you.
